Somebody That I Used to Know

I love my daughter. She and I have the most fun together. Outside of those times when she's raging hormonal. She is a beautiful, eclectic, talented, witty and very clever 16 year old. Thus, the hormones. Music is a big part of our family. I sang a lot as a child. My parents would yell at me from the living room after I went to bed, "Stop Humming, and Go to Sleep!!" {I'm sorry, Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that}...

I wanted to be a rock star when I grew up, so as a kid, I'd spend hours upon hours listening to record albums on the stereo (they call it Vinyl now), playing the same song, over and over and over, learning the words, laying down the harmonies. Harmonies were the best. Learning to sing different parts made me feel 'skilled'. Mad skills they call it.

So, as an adult, it's always sweet when you and your kids like the same music. Aside from the techno groove my daughter is currently into, we pretty much enjoy the same stuff. We've seen the video for this Gotye song, and enjoyed hearing it on the radio, but for some reason, yesterday, we decided it was time to buy the song on iTunes so we could play it in the car. This decision spawned one of the most joyful days of my life. Here's the video...

~Somebody That I Used to Know~

So, my daughter and I are singing along in the car, and we couldn't understand all of the words, so she Googles the lyrics. I have to admit, when I realized what they were actually saying and that it was really a one-sided relationship, I burst into tears. Just a few, little ones. I couldn't help myself. I have this ability to feel things very deeply, and well, music is like that for me. So, I'm wiping tears from my eyes as we're walking into Kohl's. My daughter is enjoying this moment. :) Here's the lyrics~

Somebody That I Used to Know (Gotye)

Now and then I think of when we were together
Like when you said you felt so happy you could die
I told myself that you were right for me
But felt so lonely in your company
But that was love and it's an ache I still remember

You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness
Like resignation to the end, always the end
So when we found that we could not make sense
Well you said that we would still be friends
But I'll admit that I was glad it was over

But you didn't have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing
I don't even need your love, but you treat me like a stranger
And that feels so rough

No, you didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records
And then change your number
Guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know

Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Now you're just somebody that I used to know

Now and then I think of all the times you screwed me over
But had me believin it was always something that I'd done
But I don't wanna live that way
Feeding into every word you say
You said that you could let it go
And I wouldn't catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know-oh-oh

But you didn't have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing (oh)
I don't even need your love, but you treat me like a stranger
And that feels so rough

(oh)

No, you didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect you records
And then change your number (oh)
Guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know

Somebody that I used to know
Somebody (now you're just somebody that I used to know)
That I used to know
Somebody that I used to know
Somebody (somebody) (now you're just somebody that I used to know)
That I used to know

I used to know
That I used to know
I used to know
Somebody

This is what my daughter and I looked like in the car while singing this song. Kinda. 'Cept we did it over and over and over... and better. *cough*  :)

~That Gotye Song~

Today, I found this parody done by Jake and Amir. Check out the expressions on this guy's face while the teacher is singing... LOL... Priceless.

~Some Study That I Used to Know~

Well, I guess that's it for today. I just had to share the beauty and bliss of my fabulous day with the Nova Unit. We love this song, and hope you enjoy it, too. And, feel free to share with us any favorite fun times you have with your kids. We'd love to hear it. Have a great week!
